Fluke Test

Further information

Fasciolosis, commonly known as liver fluke disease, is caused by the parasitic flatworm Fasciola hepatica, a type of trematode. The disease occurs when large numbers of immature flukes migrate through the liver tissue, when adult flukes inhabit the bile ducts, or through both processes simultaneously. While Fasciola hepatica can infect all grazing animals, it primarily affects sheep and cattle.

Rumen fluke (Calicophoron daubneyi) is another trematode increasingly detected in grazing livestock. Heavy infestations of immature flukes in the small intestine can lead to diarrhoea, weight loss and reduced productivity, especially in young or stressed animals. Both liver and rumen flukes share the same intermediate host the mud snail (Galba truncatula) and are associated with similar wet grazing environments.

This screen is undertaken in our own purpose-built laboratory, by fully trained and experienced analysts using specialist testing apparatus.

Our Fluke Test is a laboratory faecal screen for grazing animals at risk of liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica) and relevant rumen fluke. Liver fluke is particularly associated with cattle and sheep, but can affect other grazing animals including horses, alpacas and goats. Risk is closely linked with wet grazing and the Galba truncatula mud snail.

The screen is undertaken in our purpose-built laboratory by fully trained and experienced analysts using specialist testing apparatus. Up to two animals of the same species that live and graze together may be submitted as a pooled sample, producing one result.

We report fluke eggs detected in the submitted sample, including liver fluke findings and relevant rumen-fluke observations where the laboratory method identifies them. Up to two same-species animals that live and graze together may be pooled under the current live service, producing one combined result. If clinical suspicion remains high despite a negative faecal result, veterinary assessment is recommended.

Fluke testing is completed, reviewed and issued within 24 hours of arrival into the laboratory. This test must be used before the published use by date on the lab request form, due to reagent stability. The usage window will be at least 5 weeks from the point of order, athough we will always provide as long as is possible.

This kit is for one animal and includes a recyclable padded return envelope, free tracked 24-hour return postage, a laboratory request form and instruction sheet, a recyclable sample collection box in a resealable write-on bag, a biodegradable second sealable bag and a biodegradable natural wood sampling spoon.
