Successful breeding is about giving animals the best possible start in life. Internal parasites can pose a risk to both breeding animals and their offspring, and the timing of any testing and/or necessary intervention is important. Getting this balance right helps avoid unnecessary risks during sensitive stages of development.

Parasite control during pregnancy and in the early weeks of a litter’s life requires careful management. Hormonal changes during pregnancy affect how parasites behave within the body, which means the timing of any screening is critical to achieving a meaningful result. Our clinical team can advise you on the optimal testing schedule based on your animal’s species, breed, gestation stage and individual circumstances.
Our breeder screens detect intestinal worms as standard, and also screen for coccidia which is particularly relevant in young animals. Coccidia can cause significant gastrointestinal upset even at relatively low levels. Where a positive result is returned, our qualified clinical team can advise on the next steps.
For newborn animals, pooled litter sampling is appropriate up to three weeks of age, where all offspring can be tested from a single combined sample. Beyond three weeks, individual screens are required for each animal, and pooled samples should not be relied upon to be representative of the whole litter. If any animal in the litter appears unwell or is showing symptoms distinct from its littermates, individual testing is always recommended regardless of age.
