Camelids can be clinically affected by relatively low parasite burdens. The Camelid Worm Count Test therefore uses a sensitive faecal egg-counting approach to identify and quantify relevant gastrointestinal parasites and coccidia in alpacas and llamas.
All samples are examined by fully trained laboratory staff using advanced microscopy in our veterinary laboratory. Our aim is to provide clear, accurate and reliable laboratory results that are easy to understand and useful when making parasite-control decisions. Free after-test advice is available with the service if you would like help understanding the findings or deciding what to do next.
We recommend this test for: routine herd-health monitoring, checking a higher-risk or poorly performing animal, or reviewing response to a parasite-control programme.
Why we recommend this test: a camelid-focused result gives more useful information than a generic livestock screen and supports earlier, more targeted decisions. Where species-level confirmation of Haemonchus contortus is needed, the dedicated Barber Pole worm qPCR test can be added.
We provide a sensitive eggs-per-gram assessment of relevant gastrointestinal nematodes and records other parasite findings such as cestodes and coccidia. The live Wormcount camelid service specifically includes Barber Pole worm within the broader microscopy report and recognises Eimeria macusaniensis. Where species-level confirmation of Haemonchus is required, a separate qPCR test is the more specific option.
Wormcount testing is completed, reviewed and issued within 24 hours of arrival into the laboratory.
