Tritrichomonas foetus Test for Cats (qPCR)

Further information

Our Tritrichomonas foetus qPCR Test for Cats detects Tritrichomonas DNA in a feline faecal sample.

Feline trichomonosis is associated with persistent or recurrent large-bowel diarrhoea. Signs may include frequent loose stools, mucus, fresh blood, straining or faecal incontinence. Some infected cats show few obvious signs.

This targeted test is particularly relevant to younger cats and to breeding households, catteries and other multi-cat environments.

Need broader testing? Our Feline Parasite and Bacteria Screen investigates several possible causes of feline diarrhoea.

Our trained laboratory team processes and reviews each sample. Clear laboratory results and free after-test advice are included.

We use targeted quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) to detect Tritrichomonas genetic material in the submitted feline faecal sample.

Sample collection: Collect a fresh sample from one cat, ideally during an episode of diarrhoea if possible. Keep the sample free from cat litter, as some litter materials can interfere with PCR testing. Use the supplied container, follow the quantity instructions and return it promptly.

This single-target molecular test does not identify other infectious or non-infectious causes of diarrhoea. Your vet may recommend further tests if signs persist.

We report Tritrichomonas DNA as Detected or Not Detected. Where detected, we also provide the quantification cycle (Cq) value.

Results should be reviewed by a vet alongside the cat’s clinical signs, history and any previous treatment. A negative result cannot entirely exclude infection if the organism was not present in the sample submitted.

Turnaround time: Results are issued within 5 working days of the sample arriving at our laboratory.

Use-by date: Use and return your sample before the use-by date shown on the laboratory request form. We supply kits with at least 6 weeks remaining from the date of order and, where possible, longer.

This kit is for one animal and includes:

  • Recyclable padded return envelope.
  • Free Tracked 24 return postage.
  • Laboratory request form and sampling instructions.
  • Recyclable sample collection box in a resealable write-on bag.
  • Second biodegradable sealable bag.
  • Biodegradable natural wood sampling spoon.
