Our Giardia qPCR Test for Dogs and Cats detects Giardia duodenalis DNA in a faecal sample.
Giardia is an intestinal protozoan parasite that can affect dogs and cats. Infection may be associated with soft stools, diarrhoea or other digestive signs, although some infected animals show no symptoms.
This targeted molecular test can help investigate persistent or recurrent gastrointestinal signs, or cases where Giardia is a specific concern.
Looking for broader screening? Our Canine Diarrhoea Screen and Feline Parasite and Bacteria Screen test for multiple potential causes of digestive problems.
Our trained laboratory team processes and reviews each sample. Clear laboratory results and free after-test advice are included.
We use quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) to detect Giardia duodenalis genetic material in the submitted faecal sample.
Sample collection: Collect a fresh faecal sample from one dog or cat using the supplied container. Follow the kit instructions for the quantity required, avoid litter, soil and water contamination, and return the sample promptly in the supplied packaging.
qPCR detects DNA rather than proving that organisms are alive. Giardia can shed intermittently, so a single negative sample does not fully exclude infection. This test does not screen for other causes of gastrointestinal disease.
We report Giardia duodenalis DNA as Detected or Not Detected. Where detected, we also provide the quantification cycle (Cq) value.
A positive result should be reviewed by a vet alongside the animal’s signs and treatment history. DNA can remain detectable after treatment, so a positive qPCR result alone does not confirm an active infection or treatment failure.
Turnaround time: Results are issued within 5 working days of the sample arriving at our laboratory.
Use-by date: Use and return your sample before the use-by date shown on the laboratory request form. We supply kits with at least 6 weeks remaining from the date of order and, where possible, longer.
After treatment: We can accept a sample from 48 hours after completing Giardia treatment. However, qPCR may remain positive because it detects DNA and should not be used on its own to confirm whether treatment has worked.
Dispatch and direct submission: Orders placed before 3pm, Monday to Friday, are dispatched the same working day using a 24-hour service. If you prefer to send a sample directly to our laboratory, please contact us for a Unique Lab Reference (ULR) number and submission instructions.
