Feline QuadSave – Worm Count, Lungworm, Giardia & Cryptosporidium Test

Further information

Our Feline QuadSave Parasite Test provides comprehensive laboratory screening for gastrointestinal worms, feline lungworm, Giardia and Cryptosporidium in one package.

The combined test uses microscopy, specialist lungworm screening and targeted antigen methods. Together, these procedures investigate different parasites and support more informed decisions about your cat’s health.

What does the Feline QuadSave test include?

Four complementary laboratory tests are included:

  • Worm Count Test: Microscopy to identify gastrointestinal parasite eggs and relevant protozoa, with counts measured where appropriate.
  • Lungworm Test: Specialist screening for Aelurostrongylus abstrusus larvae and Eucoleus aerophilus eggs.
  • Giardia Antigen Test: Targeted testing to check for Giardia antigen in faeces.
  • Cryptosporidium Antigen Test: Targeted testing to check for Cryptosporidium antigen in faeces.

Who is this test suitable for?

This broader screening package can be useful when several parasites need to be considered. For example, we recommend considering it for:

  • Outdoor or hunting cats, particularly those that eat prey.
  • Cats that may encounter slugs or snails.
  • Kittens, breeding cats and cats living in multi-cat households.
  • Cats with intermittent soft stools or other gastrointestinal concerns.
  • Cats with a previous history of intestinal worms, lungworm, Giardia or Cryptosporidium.

How does the testing process work?

Your kit includes collection instructions and the materials needed to return the relevant samples.

The lungworm component requires faecal samples collected over three consecutive days. In addition, the worm count and antigen components require their own samples, as explained in the kit.

Our trained laboratory team processes and reviews each component separately. Consequently, results may arrive in more than one email.

Every QuadSave package includes clear laboratory reports and free after-test advice where required.

Looking for more detailed parasite and bacterial testing?

Our Feline Parasite and Bacteria Panel combines a worm count, lungworm screen and eight-target qPCR panel for a broader investigation of selected gastrointestinal pathogens. This may be helpful when symptoms persist or recur.

Our Feline QuadSave Parasite Test combines four specialist laboratory screens in one package: a worm count, lungworm screen, Giardia antigen test and Cryptosporidium antigen test.

Gastrointestinal Worm Count

The laboratory uses microscopy to screen for the listed feline roundworms, hookworms, tapeworm eggs and Cystoisospora spp. and to quantify egg or oocyst counts where appropriate.

Feline Lungworm Screen

We examine a separate pooled faecal sample collected over three consecutive days using specialist larval detection for Aelurostrongylus abstrusus and faecal microscopy for Eucoleus aerophilus eggs.

Giardia Antigen Test

Targeted antigen testing checks for Giardia antigen in the submitted faecal sample.

Cryptosporidium Antigen Test

A separate antigen test checks for Cryptosporidium antigen. Both protozoa can be associated with gastrointestinal signs, although some cats may show no obvious symptoms.

Laboratory Reporting

We review and report each component individually. As the methods and turnaround times differ, the results may be issued separately.

Clear laboratory reports and free after-test advice are included where required.

Our Feline QuadSave Parasite Test provides separate findings for gastrointestinal parasites, feline lungworm, Giardia and Cryptosporidium.

Worm Count Results

The feline worm count report covers the following gastrointestinal parasite targets.

Gastrointestinal Nematodes

  • Toxocara cati (roundworm).
  • Toxascaris leonina (roundworm).
  • Uncinaria stenocephala (hookworm).
  • Ancylostoma tubaeforme (hookworm).

Gastrointestinal Cestodes

  • Dipylidium caninum (tapeworm).
  • Taeniid-type eggs (tapeworm).

Protozoa

  • Cystoisospora spp. (coccidia).

Quantitative and Qualitative Reporting

The listed nematode findings are quantified as eggs per gram (EPG), where appropriate. A result of <20 EPG is recorded as Below detectable limit.

Cestode eggs and Cystoisospora spp. are reported qualitatively, including whether they were seen in the submitted sample.

Visual Sample Analysis

The report may also record other artefacts observed in the submitted faecal sample.

Feline Lungworm Screen Results

Our extended feline respiratory parasite screen examines the faecal sample for the following targets:

  • Aelurostrongylus abstrusus – lungworm larvae.
  • Eucoleus aerophilus – respiratory capillarid eggs.

The laboratory report records the detection of relevant lungworm larvae or respiratory parasite eggs. Where the findings allow, we provide identification and explanatory comments.

A negative faecal result cannot completely exclude infection because larvae or eggs may be shed intermittently.

Giardia Antigen Results

We test for Giardia antigen and report the result as Detected or Not Detected.

Cryptosporidium Antigen Results

We test for Cryptosporidium antigen and report the result as Detected or Not Detected.

Understanding Your Results

Parasites may shed eggs, oocysts or larvae intermittently. Therefore, a result below the detectable limit, or a qualitative result of none seen, does not completely exclude infection.

Our trained laboratory team reviews the findings before emailing the results. The different components may be reported separately as each is completed.

Clear laboratory reporting and free after-test advice are included where required.

Worm count: Our laboratory team completes, reviews and emails results within 24 hours of the sample arriving at our laboratory.

Giardia and Cryptosporidium antigens: We complete, review and issue antigen results within 24 hours of sample arrival.

Lungworm screen: This extended procedure takes longer than a routine worm count. Results are issued on the next working day following arrival at our laboratory.

Sample collection: The lungworm component requires faecal material collected over three consecutive days. Follow the collection and storage instructions supplied with your kit.

Because the components require different laboratory methods, results may be issued separately as each part is completed.

Use-by date: The antigen components must be used by the date shown on the laboratory request form. The kit has a minimum usage window of 6 weeks from the order date.

This kit is prepared for one cat and includes the materials needed to collect and return the required faecal sample or samples to our laboratory.

  • Recyclable padded return packaging.
  • Free Tracked 24 return postage.
  • Laboratory request formS and clear collection instructions.
  • Recyclable sample collection boxes supplied in resealable write-on bag(s).
  • Biodegradable secondary sealable bags.
  • Biodegradable natural wood sampling spoon.

For the lungworm component, the instructions explain how to collect faecal material over three consecutive days.
