Detailed Screen

Reptile Parasite Test – Level 3 (Comprehensive)

Further information

Our Comprehensive Reptile Panel (Level 3) provides our broadest laboratory screen for gastrointestinal parasites and selected enteric pathogens in reptiles.

The panel combines microscopy, antigen testing and qPCR in one comprehensive investigation.

The panel includes:

  • Microscopy: screening for gastrointestinal worm eggs and relevant protozoa, including ascarids, hookworms, pinworms, tapeworms, coccidia and commensal ciliated protozoa such as Balantidium.
  • Giardia and Cryptosporidium antigen testing: targeted testing for Giardia and Cryptosporidium antigens in the faecal sample.
  • qPCR testing: molecular screening for Salmonella and Campylobacter.

This panel is suitable where broader screening is required than microscopy or antigen testing alone. It can be useful for reptiles with gastrointestinal concerns, new-animal screening or where several potential infectious causes need to be investigated.

Sample collection: This panel is for one reptile. Ideally, collect faecal material over at least three days. If your reptile does not pass faeces every day, samples from two separate bowel movements may be suitable as long as they span at least three days.

If your reptile passes faeces infrequently, please contact us. We can advise you on the most suitable sample collection method.

Every test includes a clear laboratory report and free after-test advice where required.

Our Comprehensive Reptile Panel (Level 3) combines microscopy, antigen testing and qPCR in one laboratory screen.

Our laboratory team uses microscopy to screen for gastrointestinal worm eggs, coccidia and relevant protozoa. Where appropriate, we also quantify the level detected.

The panel also includes targeted antigen testing for Giardia and Cryptosporidium, together with qPCR screening for Salmonella and Campylobacter.

Sample collection: Collect faecal material from one reptile over at least three days where possible.

Use-by date: The kit has a use-by date of at least six weeks from the point of order.

Turnaround times: Microscopy and antigen results are issued within 24 hours of arrival. qPCR results are issued within 5 working days.

Clear laboratory results and free after-test advice are included.

The report includes findings from microscopy, antigen testing and qPCR.

Microscopy: We identify and, where appropriate, quantify relevant nematodes, including ascarids, hookworms, pinworms and trichurid-type eggs. We also report cestodes (tapeworms), coccidia and relevant protozoal findings, including commensal ciliated protozoa such as Balantidium.

Antigen testing: We report whether Giardia and Cryptosporidium antigens were detected in the submitted sample.

qPCR: We report whether Salmonella and Campylobacter DNA were detected in the submitted sample.

Findings are reported according to the reptile species submitted and the relevance of each organism.

Turnaround times:

  • Worm count: within 24 hours of arrival
  • Giardia and Cryptosporidium antigen testing: within 24 hours of arrival
  • Salmonella and Campylobacter qPCR: within 5 working days

Use-by date: The kit has a use-by date of at least six weeks from the point of order. Please return the sample before the date shown on the kit.

This kit is for one animal and includes a recyclable padded return envelope, free tracked 24-hour return postage, a laboratory request form and instruction sheet, a recyclable sample collection box in a resealable write-on bag, a biodegradable second sealable bag and a biodegradable natural wood sampling spoon.
