Lungworm Test for Farm Animals

Further information

Our Farm Animal Lungworm Test is an extended laboratory screen designed to detect lungworm larvae shed in faeces. Lungworm infection can affect grazing livestock and may be associated with coughing, respiratory irritation, reduced performance and poor condition. Testing can help provide useful laboratory evidence where lungworm exposure is suspected and can support more targeted treatment decisions. Samples are processed by trained laboratory staff at Wormcount.com Veterinary Laboratory using a dedicated larval detection technique.

The Farm Animal Lungworm Test is an extended laboratory test used to detect lungworm larvae shed in faeces.

The sample is processed using a dedicated larval detection technique designed to recover motile lungworm larvae from the submitted faecal material.

This test is particularly useful where animals are showing signs that may be consistent with lungworm infection, including coughing or respiratory irritation, or where there is known or suspected exposure on pasture.

Lungworm risk can vary between species, grazing systems, age groups and management conditions. Laboratory testing can therefore provide useful information to support targeted parasite control rather than relying on routine treatment alone.

As with all faecal parasite testing, results reflect what is detectable in the submitted sample at the time of collection. Intermittent or low-level shedding may affect detection.

Your laboratory report will confirm whether lungworm larvae were detected in the submitted sample.

Where possible, the report will include identification of the lungworm species detected together with an interpretation of the finding.

If no lungworm larvae are detected, this will be clearly stated on the report.

Where relevant, additional comments and guidance are included to help explain the result and support appropriate next steps.

Free after test advice is available if you have any questions about the findings.

The lungworm screen is an extended laboratory process.

Results are completed, reviewed and issued within 48 hours of the sample arriving at the laboratory.

Because this test relies on an extended larval detection process, it takes longer than a routine faecal egg count.

This kit is for one animal and includes a recyclable padded return envelope, free tracked 24-hour return postage, a laboratory request form and instruction sheet, a recyclable sample collection box in a resealable write-on bag, a biodegradable second sealable bag and a biodegradable natural wood sampling spoon.
