Our Horse Worm Count & Lungworm Test combines an equine faecal egg count with an extended lungworm screen in one convenient laboratory package.
The faecal egg count measures gastrointestinal parasite egg shedding. The lungworm screen checks for Dictyocaulus arnfieldi, the principal lungworm affecting horses and donkeys.
This combined test is particularly useful for horses that graze with donkeys. It can also help where respiratory signs raise concern about lungworm or where broader parasite monitoring is required.
Regular testing can help you and your vet make more informed treatment decisions. It also supports targeted parasite control and can reduce unnecessary worming.
Our trained laboratory staff carry out both tests in our veterinary laboratory. We provide clear laboratory reports and free after-test advice when required.
Why choose the combined pack? It provides a broader assessment than a routine faecal egg count alone and offers a convenient way to monitor gastrointestinal parasites and equine lungworm together.
The Horse Combined Pack brings together two complementary laboratory tests.
Faecal egg count
The faecal egg count measures gastrointestinal parasite egg shedding in your horse’s faeces. We examine the sample using microscopy and report the result as eggs per gram (EPG).
The test screens for common equine gastrointestinal parasites, including strongyle-type eggs and other parasite eggs seen during microscopic examination.
Faecal egg counts can help with routine parasite monitoring and targeted worming decisions. They can also help identify horses shedding higher numbers of worm eggs and support parasite-control programmes over time.
A faecal egg count reflects egg shedding at the time of sampling. Some parasite stages may not produce detectable eggs, so the result does not directly measure the total number of adult worms present.
Lungworm screen
The lungworm screen looks for Dictyocaulus arnfieldi larvae shed in the faeces. We use a dedicated larval detection method to examine the submitted samples.
Lungworm testing is particularly relevant for horses that graze with donkeys. Donkeys can carry and shed lungworm larvae without showing obvious clinical signs.
Together, these tests provide broader parasite screening than a routine faecal egg count alone. They can help support targeted treatment and more informed parasite-control decisions.

Your laboratory report will show the findings from both parts of the Combined Pack.
Faecal egg count
The report will detail the gastrointestinal parasite eggs detected during microscopic examination and the measured level, expressed as eggs per gram (EPG) where applicable.
Results are interpreted using the relevant equine reporting thresholds to help indicate the level of parasite egg shedding.
Where no parasite eggs are detected above the detectable limit, this will be clearly stated on the report.
Lungworm
The report will confirm whether Dictyocaulus arnfieldi larvae were detected in the submitted sample and will provide an interpretation of the finding where appropriate.
Additional comments and guidance may be included to help explain the findings and support appropriate next steps.
Free after-test advice is available if you have any questions about the results.
Faecal egg count: reviewed and issued within 24 hours of arrival into the laboratory.
Lungworm screen: reviewed and issuedon the next working day and within 48 hours of arrival.
Because lungworm testing requires a different laboratory process, you may receive the faecal egg count result before the lungworm result.
For best results, please follow the collection instructions supplied with your kit and return samples promptly.
