The Horse Lungworm Test is an extended laboratory test used to detect Dictyocaulus arnfieldi larvae shed in faeces.
The sample is processed using a dedicated larval detection technique designed to recover motile lungworm larvae from the submitted faecal material.
This test can be particularly useful for:
Donkeys are an important reservoir for Dictyocaulus arnfieldi and may shed larvae while showing few or no obvious signs themselves. Horses exposed to infected donkeys can therefore be at increased risk.
As with all faecal parasite testing, results reflect what is detectable in the submitted sample at the time of collection. Low-level or intermittent larval shedding may affect detection.
Laboratory testing can help support a more targeted approach to parasite control by providing evidence before treatment decisions are made.
Your laboratory report will confirm whether Dictyocaulus arnfieldi larvae were detected in the submitted sample.
The result will be reported together with an interpretation of the finding where appropriate.
If no lungworm larvae are detected, this will be clearly stated on the report.
Where relevant, additional comments and guidance are included to help explain the result and support appropriate next steps.
Free after-test advice is available if you have any questions about the findings.
The lungworm screen is an extended testing process and results are issued within 48 hours of arrival into the laboratory.
