Our Canine Parvovirus qPCR Test detects canine parvovirus (CPV) DNA in a dog’s faecal sample using targeted molecular testing.
Canine parvovirus is highly contagious and can cause serious gastrointestinal illness, particularly in puppies and unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated dogs. Signs may include vomiting, diarrhoea, reduced appetite and marked lethargy.
Urgent veterinary advice: If your dog is unwell and parvovirus is suspected, contact your vet immediately. Do not wait for a postal test result before seeking care.
This test may support veterinary investigation where parvovirus infection or faecal shedding is a concern. A recent vaccination can affect the interpretation of a positive result.
Our trained laboratory team processes and reviews each sample. Clear laboratory results and free after-test advice are included.
We use quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) to detect canine parvovirus DNA in a dog’s submitted faecal sample.
Sample collection: Follow your vet’s instructions and the supplied kit guidance when collecting a fresh sample from one dog. Use the supplied container, avoid contamination and return the sample promptly. Take particular care to prevent contamination of other animals and surfaces.
Modified-live parvovirus vaccination can lead to temporary detection of vaccine-derived viral DNA. Recent vaccination dates, clinical signs and exposure history are important when interpreting a positive qPCR result.
We report canine parvovirus (CPV) DNA as Detected or Not Detected. Where detected, we also provide the quantification cycle (Cq) value.
A positive result does not necessarily distinguish natural infection from recent vaccine-associated shedding. A negative result does not override clinical concern. Your vet should interpret the report alongside the dog’s condition and vaccination history.
Turnaround time: Results are issued within 5 working days of the sample arriving at our laboratory.
Use-by date: Use and return your sample before the use-by date shown on the laboratory request form. We supply kits with at least 6 weeks remaining from the date of order and, where possible, longer.
Important: This is a postal laboratory test, not an emergency diagnostic service. Dogs suspected of having parvovirus need urgent veterinary assessment.
