Our Toxoplasma gondii qPCR Test uses targeted molecular testing to detect Toxoplasma gondii DNA in a faecal sample.
T. gondii is a protozoan parasite that can infect many animal species. Cats and other felids are the definitive hosts and may shed oocysts in their faeces, usually for a limited period after infection.
This test checks for T. gondii DNA in faeces. DNA detection alone does not confirm that a cat is actively shedding oocysts. It is not a general screen for previous exposure or a diagnostic test for toxoplasmosis affecting organs and tissues.
Our trained laboratory team processes and reviews each sample. Clear laboratory results and free after-test advice are included.
We use quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) to detect T. gondii genetic material in the submitted faecal sample.
Sample collection: Collect a fresh sample from one animal using the supplied container and sampling spoon. Follow the kit instructions for the amount required, avoid soil or litter contamination, and return the sample promptly in the provided packaging.
Cats generally shed oocysts for a short period, so a single negative result cannot exclude previous infection. A positive DNA result does not prove that oocysts are present, viable or infectious.
If submitting a sample from an animal other than a cat, please contact our laboratory first to confirm test suitability.
We report Toxoplasma gondii DNA as Detected or Not Detected. Where detected, we also provide the quantification cycle (Cq) value.
Important: Detecting T. gondii DNA in a cat’s faeces does not necessarily confirm oocyst shedding; DNA from recently eaten infected material may also be detected. A negative result does not rule out past exposure. Your vet should interpret the finding in context.
Turnaround time: Results are issued within 5 working days of the sample arriving at our laboratory.
Use-by date: Use and return your sample before the use-by date shown on the laboratory request form. We supply kits with at least 6 weeks remaining from the date of order and, where possible, longer.
