Worm Count Test for Cats

Further information

“

Our Cat Worm Count Test provides laboratory screening for gastrointestinal parasite eggs and relevant protozoa in your cat’s faecal sample.

Using microscopy, our trained laboratory team checks for the listed parasite eggs and oocysts and measures nematode egg counts where appropriate. As a result, the test supports a targeted approach to parasite control and helps you make informed decisions about your cat’s health.

What does the Cat Worm Count Test include?

The gastrointestinal parasite screen checks for:

  • Roundworms: Toxocara cati and Toxascaris leonina.
  • Hookworms: Uncinaria stenocephala and Ancylostoma tubaeforme.
  • Tapeworms: Dipylidium caninum and taeniid-type eggs, where present.
  • Coccidia: Cystoisospora spp.

Who is this test suitable for?

Regular worm counts can help monitor intestinal parasites and support more informed worming decisions. For example, this screening may be useful for:

  • Kittens and breeding cats undergoing routine parasite monitoring.
  • Outdoor cats and cats that regularly hunt or eat prey.
  • Cats living in multi-cat households.
  • Cats with a previous history of gastrointestinal worms.
  • Owners who want to make more targeted decisions about worming treatment.
  • Follow-up monitoring after treatment, where appropriate.

How does the testing process work?

Each kit includes clear instructions and the materials needed to collect and return a fresh, representative faecal sample.

Once the sample arrives, our laboratory team examines it using microscopy. Following examination and review, we email your report within 24 hours of arrival at our laboratory.

Although a worm count provides useful information about parasite shedding, it reflects the submitted sample. In particular, tapeworm eggs can be shed intermittently, so a negative result does not completely exclude infection.

In addition, every Cat Worm Count Test includes a clear laboratory report and free after-test advice where required.

Looking for lungworm screening too?

Our Combined Worm Count and Lungworm Test for Cats adds a separate feline lungworm screen to the gastrointestinal worm count. The lungworm component requires faecal samples collected over three consecutive days.

Our Cat Worm Count Test uses laboratory microscopy to screen your cat’s faecal sample for gastrointestinal parasite eggs and relevant protozoa.

Gastrointestinal Parasite Microscopy

Trained laboratory staff examine the submitted sample using established faecal microscopy techniques. The screen includes the four listed feline ascarid and hookworm targets, tapeworm-type eggs and Cystoisospora spp. Nematode egg counts are measured where appropriate.

Gastrointestinal nematode results are reported as eggs per gram (EPG), including a below-detectable-limit result where the count is <20 EPG. The cestode and coccidial findings are reported qualitatively.

Additional Observations

The laboratory report also includes a visual sample analysis recording other artefacts in the sample where relevant.

Because some parasites shed eggs intermittently, a negative faecal test cannot completely exclude infection, particularly for tapeworm.

Our laboratory team reviews the findings before emailing the results. Free after-test advice is available where required.

Our Cat Worm Count Test provides the following feline gastrointestinal parasite findings from faecal microscopy.

Worm Count Results

The feline worm count report covers the following gastrointestinal parasite targets.

Gastrointestinal Nematodes

  • Toxocara cati (roundworm).
  • Toxascaris leonina (roundworm).
  • Uncinaria stenocephala (hookworm).
  • Ancylostoma tubaeforme (hookworm).

Gastrointestinal Cestodes

  • Dipylidium caninum (tapeworm).
  • Taeniid-type eggs (tapeworm).

Protozoa

  • Cystoisospora spp. (coccidia).

Quantitative and Qualitative Reporting

The listed nematode findings are quantified as eggs per gram (EPG), where appropriate. A result of <20 EPG is recorded as Below detectable limit.

Cestode eggs and Cystoisospora spp. are reported qualitatively, including whether they were seen in the submitted sample.

Visual Sample Analysis

The report may also record other artefacts observed in the submitted faecal sample.

Understanding Your Results

Parasites may shed eggs, oocysts or larvae intermittently. Therefore, a result below the detectable limit, or a qualitative result of none seen, does not completely exclude infection.

Our trained laboratory team reviews the findings before emailing the result.

Clear laboratory reporting and free after-test advice are included where required.
