Worm Count Test for Rabbits and Small Companion Animals

Further information

Our Worm Count Test for Rabbits and Small Companion Animals is a laboratory-based faecal parasite screen. It helps identify gastrointestinal parasite eggs and oocysts using microscopy.

The test is suitable for rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, rats and other small companion animals. We adapt the laboratory assessment to the species submitted because parasite profiles vary between different hosts.

Parasites may contribute to signs such as diarrhoea, weight loss, poor growth or reduced condition. However, some animals can carry parasites without showing obvious signs.

Faecal testing can help you and your vet make more informed treatment decisions. It also supports a targeted approach to parasite control and can help reduce unnecessary medication.

Our trained laboratory staff examine each sample in our veterinary laboratory. We provide clear laboratory results by email and free after-test advice when required.

We recommend this test for: routine parasite monitoring, newly acquired animals, animals with a previous parasite history, or where gastrointestinal signs raise concern about parasites.

Why we recommend this test: parasite risks differ between companion species. A species-appropriate laboratory screen provides useful information to support treatment and ongoing parasite management.

The Companion Animal Worm Count Test provides a species-appropriate faecal parasite screen for rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, rats and other small companion animals.

Our laboratory staff examine the sample using microscopy. We adapt the assessment to the species submitted because parasite types and significance can vary between hosts.

We recommend this test for: routine parasite monitoring, new-animal checks or investigating diarrhoea, weight loss, poor growth or reduced condition where parasites may be involved.

Why we recommend this test: a species-appropriate faecal screen can provide useful evidence before treatment. It may also help avoid unnecessary medication when the test does not identify a significant parasite burden.

We provide clear laboratory results and free after test advice when required.

We report the parasite groups found in the sample and provide quantitative results where the method and parasite allow. Relevant nematodes, cestodes and protozoa are identified according to the species submitted. Tapeworm material is reported if seen. Results are written in plain language while retaining the technical information needed for vet where treatment or further investigation is required.

Wormcount testing is completed, reviewed and issued within 24 hours of arrival into the laboratory.
